"Flotsam & Jetsam (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #0.2)" Reviews
Smutné, moc smutné...
Oh wow. Another amazing novella by Carrie Ryan. I think I will read anything by her.
I enjoyed reading this fast paced short zombie read. Kinda tugs at the heart.
Wow. This one is twisted and ironic. I loved it.
I am a big fan of 'The Forest of Hands and Teeth' series and I always enjoy returning to that world. 'Flotsam & Jetsam' is the story of Jeremy and the unnamed narrator, both of them survivors of the zombie outbreak on their cruise. As the boat sails away from the cruise, Jeremy has been bitten and both character have to make some choices.
I love Carrie Ryan and I can't get enough of her Forest of Hands and Teeth world - why she isn't extending the series further is a mystery to me. A mystery that makes me very sad!
Anyway, this short tale stands alone from the series but ties in to the same zombie apocalypse. So there are these two guys (at least I think the narrator is a guy based on the stubble they're said to have - but who really knows?). Jeremy, a bitten guy, is stuck on a life boat with his friend (whose identity remains unknown) after the zombie outbreak hits whilst they're on a cruise with friends.
This made for a really cool setting. The moral dilemma for our narrator is interesting and I genuinely wasn't sure which way they would go - do you put your infected friend out of their misery (preferably before you become their dinner!) or do you take your chances and hope they get better. Incidentally, could you even kill your best friend, even if it was the kinder option? I really loved how this made me question myself, which is pretty impressive I'm such a short novella.
The ending of this one will be a little like marmite for readers - you'll either love it or hate it. I personally loved it - it had a fantastic impact and Ryan's blunt, eerie nature as an author always keeps me hooked. Her writing really is wonderful for weaving a desperate, dark theme throughout all of her books within this series.
Definitely a must read for fans and a brilliant first novella as a teaser for those wanting to give this series a whirl.
