It’s 1941, and Captain Alexander M. Riley and his crew of deep-sea treasure hunters believe they’re setting off on yet another adventure—to find a mysterious artifact off the coast of Morocco for an enigmatic millionaire with questionable motives. Part-time smugglers, world travelers, and expats who have fought causes both valiant and doomed, Riley and his crew soon find themselves in the crosshairs of a deal much more dangerous than the one they bargained for. From Spain to Morocco to an Atlantic crossing that leads to Washington, DC, Captain Riley must sail his ship, the Pingarrón, straight through the eye of a ruthless squall and into a conspiracy that goes by the name Operation Apokalypse—a storm that only he and his crew can navigate.
"Captain Riley (Captain Riley Adventures #1)" Reviews
The best way I can describe this book is a comparison of the TV show Firefly. All the characters are there; the ex soldier of a losing war Captain, the loyal second in command during the war now second in command of a ship, the married couple crewmates, the burly mercenary that is just there for the money but still treated like family, two passengers that are hiding a secret and the love interest of the captain who is like a geisha. Throw in some action, working a job for a dangerous criminal for the potential payoff to make them all rich and you got yourself another movie... except this one takes place in 1941.
In terms of an action book it has everything there. Gunfights, treasure hunts, Nazi Submarines, sex scenes, hero gets beat up to inch of life but still able to pull off great feats of strength. If these are things you like, then this is the book for you.
This is not part of a series, but I could see how there could be turned into one... maybe cancel it after the first season.
This book is a real page turner. One of the best action stories I've read in quite some time. This book is non-stop. Fernando Gamboa has created a real action hero. Set in WWII, Captain Riley is the captain of a freighter. He and his small crew are smugglers called upon to retrieve a sunken item from a ship and in the process find themselves in a race against time to save the world. For the most part, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I did "ding" Gamboa one star because he decided to write a pretty gratuitous sex scene (well more like one and a half) into this book that was totally unnecessary and the characters use a little too much TVMA language for my taste. Gamboa is a great writer who (in this writer's opinion, at least) doesn't need to do those things to craft a great story. Overall this is a really well written book.
I purchased this as a Kindle First. I am so glad I did. It was an absolute riveting read. Non stop action and very likeable characters.
Fernando Gamboa's style of writing is excellent. I can see why his books have been best sellers in Spain's Kindle sales.
Not only is their plenty of action, but the book is sprinkled with historic references that add to the ambience of the story.
Captain Alexander Riley is likeable as he is flawed and not portrayed as the absolute perfect hero who gets everything right.
If you are a fan of Clive Cusselor then you are in for a treat, but saying that I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good adventure story.
Predictable plot. Wasn't really anything that kept interest, just felt like a slog at times. This genre needs to be disrupted.
