Stephanie Garber’s limitless imagination takes flight once more in the colorful, mesmerizing, and immersive sequel to the bestselling breakout debut Caraval
A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.
After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.
The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister's. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval...the games have only just begun.

This book was so much fun! People said it was even better than Caraval and I have to agree with that! I really loved Tella as a main character. This book expanded the world of Caraval so much, and expanded the character of Legend a lot too. Once I started I couldn’t put it down; I ended up finishing it in a few short hours. Loved it!

Ok someone has to do this gif:
Anywayssss I just read this book in one sitting with a stupid grin on my face because the way everything unfolds is absolutely BRILLIANT. I won't spoil anything here, though!! Just a few random thoughts...
The main character in this sequel is Scarlett's sister Tella, whom I absolutely love. She has so much agency that it's just amazing to watch the story take shape:

"Tella might have been many things, but she was far from silly or worthless or whatever labels people liked to affix because a person was young and female. Tella liked to think that was where much of her strength came from. She was bold. She was brave. She was cunning. And she was going to come out of this triumphant - no matter the cost."

Tella needs to win Caraval to see her mother again, but will also come face-to-face with Legend if she wins. I thought we might possibly maaaaaybe have an advantage going into this story since we're familiar with Caraval from the previous book. But, nope... we're told that the game is real this time, so even the general concept of Caraval is unreliable.
Once again, the story becomes an incredibly twisted web of identities, loyalties, and motivations (even from characters you think you know). For most of this book I was sitting there like "EVERYONE IS LEGEND. NOBODY IS LEGEND. Am I Legend?!"
I would love to see how Stephanie plots out these stories because they're such a fun roller coaster of reveals and FEELS. Her strong writing is another aspect that really stands out... I honestly couldn't put this down and totally forgot I was reading a piece of paper. The execution is so good and the writing is so engaging that it's completely effortless to read. That alone is so, so wonderful to find, but then there's an awesome story on top of it aaaaand now I have a major book hangover.
Umm other things I loved: the cocky guys, POC characters, romance, new setting, and that ending omgggg. I don't care what we've been told - I STILL TRUST NOTHING OK.
Basically, this was everything I hoped for. If you liked Caraval then get excited for this one!!
Thank you to the publisher for sending me an ARC. The quotes above were taken from an ARC and are subject to change upon publication.

Where do I start? I just want to say to begin with, that this book was amazing and it blew me away! I only finished it a few hours ago and I already want to reread it!
In the books, Caraval is described in a way, that as soon as it starts, you can literally feel the magic around you, and this is how I felt every time I opened up this book and started reading it. I just got lost and engulfed in the story and I felt like I could almost feel the magic coming out of the book.
The plot of this book seemed more solid than in the first book. There seemed to be a lot more at stake this time around, more mystery, and even more magic. Also the world building was wonderful, and it built more on what we learnt in the first book, with different settings in the empire being explored this time around. Also the expansion of the mythology / magic of the world was so enchanting and I just want to learn even more, which I'm sure we will in the next book hopefully!
This book is told from the perspective of Donatella (aka 'tella'), which I preferred a lot more than Scarlet's. Tella's character seemed to have more depth and seemed more developed than Scarlet in the first book. (I'd like to add that I still really liked Scarlet). I loved seeing Tella's relationships develop with the people around her (especially Dante and Jacks), I enjoy her character so much!
Some plot twists were kind of predictable, but at the same time, when they got revealed throughout the book, I was still shocked when they were revealed!
I honestly don't think there was a thing I didn't like about this book! I just wish it was longer! And I really hope there are going to be more books, because the ending was left pretty open, and there is so much that still needs resolving! There is so much more to this world that needs exploring!

First off, there’s another book, right? Because this book left me with too many unanswered questions! More than book one... so it’s a bit tricky for me here because if there’s another book, then this one was hella great, but if this is the last book then I’m just too flustered to think!
I’m just going to go ahead and say that the world that Stephanie Garber has created is freaking cool and amazing. I thought Tella was a decent character, although I did like Scarlett more.
As with Julian, I really liked Dante. Stephanie can write some great males! Even the new character Jacks was incredibly intriguing. I love the mystery behind the curtains, because I never know what's going to be revealed to me. Who is Legend? Where is Legend? What is Legend? Do I know? I think I know! These books really do feel like a game, and a game I enjoy playing.
So again if this is the last book, then I’m sort of pissed lol. But if it’s not then bravo, bravo, bravo. If you want a great place to escape, then try to find your way through Caraval and live through Garber's gorgeous writing!
